When Shortness of Breath Signals Heart Trouble

    hero image

Shortness of breath can be easy to dismiss, often mistaken for being “out of shape.” But sometimes, it’s more than just fitness. In this episode of The Orange Club Podcast, Dr. Dimpu Edwin explains how difficulty climbing stairs or even mild exertion can be an early signal from the heart.

The Myth of “I’m Just Unfit”

It’s common for people to assume breathlessness comes from lack of exercise or poor stamina. Many push it aside, believing they just need to work out more. But if shortness of breath doesn’t improve or feels out of proportion to the activity like struggling with just two flights of stairs it may be a sign the heart is under stress. Recognising this difference is the first step toward seeking help.

Is Your Heart Throwing a Subtle SOS?

The heart is constantly working to pump blood and maintain a balance of fluids. In early heart disease, this balance becomes fragile. When the heart is pushed by extra exertion or even by additional fluid intake, it struggles to keep up. Breathlessness is the body’s way of saying the heart has reached its limit and cannot accommodate more strain.

How These Symptoms Are Different From Normal Breathlessness

Unlike fitness-related breathlessness, which improves with training, heart-related symptoms persist and often feel more intense. Sweating, feeling unusually hot or cold, or breathlessness that doesn’t resolve quickly can all be subtle signs that the heart is signalling trouble. Ignoring these signs can delay diagnosis at a stage when treatment could make the biggest difference.

This is just one part of a larger discussion about how the body signals heart distress and when symptoms should prompt a medical check. For a more detailed perspective, watch the full episode of The Orange Club Podcast on heart health
