What Really Triggers Heart Attacks and Cardiac Arrests?

    hero image

Heart problems don’t always strike out of the blue. Oftentimes, they are the result of years of habits and hidden risks adding up. In this episode of The Orange Club Podcast, Dr. Dimpu Edwin and Tarun Bhambra, Co-founder of Orange Health Labs, break down the major contributors to heart attacks and cardiac arrests, and why even “normal” test results don’t always mean you’re in the clear.

Watch the video here: What triggers heart attack

The Two Biggest Culprits Behind Heart Problems

Among all the cases seen in clinics, two conditions dominate the picture: heart attacks and heart failure. A heart attack usually happens because of blockages in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Heart failure, on the other hand, occurs when the heart is no longer able to pump effectively to meet the body’s demands. Both represent critical breakdowns, but for very different reasons.

Risky Behaviors That Add Fuel to the Fire

Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and sedentary living are some of the most common lifestyle risks tied to heart disease. Even if cholesterol levels look fine on paper, these habits change how the body processes fat in the blood. Over time, this makes it easier for cholesterol to deposit in arteries, increasing the chances of blockages that trigger a heart attack.

Why “Normal” Test Results Can Still Be Misleading

It’s a mistake to rely solely on cholesterol reports to judge heart health. A “normal” value may give a false sense of security if risky habits are still part of daily life. Cholesterol that seems harmless in bloodwork can quickly become dangerous when paired with high blood sugar, smoking, or lack of exercise. This is why prevention has to go beyond lab numbers and focus on overall lifestyle.
