    Can an HIV test detect AIDS?

    No, an HIV test detects the virus that causes AIDS, but it does not diagnose AIDS itself. AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV infection and is determined by a clinical diagnosis based on CD4 count (below 200 cells/mm³) or the presence of specific opportunistic infections. Early HIV testing and treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) can prevent the progression to AIDS.
