What is the Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) test?
The Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) is a protein that is produced by cells throughout the body and is associated with the activation of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that plays a very important role in the immune response to infections. The conditions that trigger the immune system, such as an infection by mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria caused by tuberculosis (TB), may cause increased values of ADA to be produced in the area where the bacteria are present.
When is the Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) test recommended?
It is recommended:
An ADA test may be done for a person who has an accumulation of fluid in the chest cavity (pleural fluid) and has signs or symptoms that suggest TB, such as a chronic cough, sometimes with bloody sputum, fever, chills, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and chest pain.
This test may be processed as one of several tests to help rule in or rule out TB as the cause of the person’s symptoms.
People who come within close contact with someone who is an active infectious TB patient.
The symptoms of TB include chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and coughing. These types of symptoms are often seen in other conditions, too.
Children who are younger than 5 years old have a positive for TB screening test.
What does it measure?
The Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) test measure:
The Adenosine Deaminase serum is a test that is used to analyse the ADA. It helps detect tuberculosis (TB), which causes an increase in the values in ADA. This test also detects if tuberculosis might have spread to the lining of the lungs (pleura).
Therefore, this test helps with a diagnosis identity and timely treatment. It is also prescribed if any person is at a higher risk of contracting TB, if they live close to an infected person, or if their immune system is weak.
