High CRP levels indicate the presence of inflammation in the body. This could result from acute infections, such as bacterial or viral illnesses, or chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease. Elevated CRP can also signal tissue injury, trauma, or post-surgical inflammation. Extremely high CRP levels (above 10 mg/dL) are often associated with severe infections or systemic inflammation, such as sepsis. In cardiovascular health, a high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) test showing levels above 3 mg/L indicates an increased risk of heart disease or stroke. Elevated CRP is not disease-specific, so additional tests and clinical evaluation are needed to determine the underlying cause. Discuss your results with your doctor to understand their implications in the context of your overall health.
