Rarely, a rash, cough, or diarrhea may occur. These symptoms are not specific to CMV infection and may be caused by other conditions. Unfortunately, often the first time a pregnant woman is aware of CMV is when she has a baby who has been diagnosed with congenital CMV infection.
What does it measure?
The Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibody IgM test: Used to determine if a person has a recent or active CMV infection. The IgM antibodies usually develop within 1-2 weeks after the initial infection and are no longer detectable after several months. The IgG antibodies typically begin to develop several weeks after the infection and remain present for the life of the person. CMV IgM antibodies are produced by the body first in response to a CMV infection. They can be evaluated in the blood within a week or two after the initial exposure. These IgM levels (titers) rise for a short time, then decline and usually fall below detectable levels after a few months. The IgM antibody levels rise again when latent CMV is reactivated.
