What is the Fructosamine test?

Fructosamine is a glycated serum protein that is formed by the combination of glucose and protein in the blood. The higher the levels of blood glucose, the higher the concentration of fructosamine. Therefore, the fructosamine levels reflect the amount of glucose present in your blood. The glycation mainly involves albumin, which is the principal blood protein.

When is the Fructosamine test recommended?

It is recommended:

  • When a person is beginning treatment or changing medications for diabetes to help determine how well their medication is controlling their blood sugar levels.

  • For pregnant diabetic women sometimes because blood sugar and other levels can fluctuate rapidly during pregnancy.

  • For people who have conditions that will affect the accuracy of a hemoglobin A1C test, such as hemolytic anemia.

What does it measure?

The Fructosamine test:

  • Measures the amount of glucose attached to proteins in the serum or plasma, which both come from the fluid portion of the blood. Glucose is a sugar that the human body uses as the main source of energy for its cells. The body obtains glucose from the food we eat.

  • The higher the levels of glucose present in the blood, the more of it will attach to proteins. Albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood and the main component of the fructosamine measurement. These proteins are present in the blood for about 14 to 21 days, so the Fructosamine test reflects average glucose levels over the previous 2 to 3 weeks.
