    What is an Amylase test?
Amylase is an enzyme that is produced primarily by the pancreas and the salivary glands to help digest carbohydrates. This test measures the amount of Amylase in the blood or urine or sometimes in peritoneal fluid, which is the fluid found between the membranes that are covered in the abdominal cavity and the outside of the abdominal organs.
When is the Amylase test recommended?
It is recommended:To diagnose acute and chronic pancreatitis. This helps in diagnosing pancreatic cysts, pancreatic pseudocysts, and pancreatic abscesses. To determine the blockage of the pancreatic ducts. To analyse certain conditions that affect the digestive system, like peptic ulcers, infections, appendicitis, etc.To check the types of tumours like pancreatic cancer. To analyse the treatment of pancreatic diseases.
    What does it measure?
The Amylase test:Analyses the level of Amylase, a digestive enzyme, in the blood. This test may also be prescribed if you experience any symptoms, such as abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, vomiting, or discomfort in and around the abdomen.Amylase is an enzyme that helps in the breakdown of complex dietary carbohydrates into simple carbohydrates for absorption. The digestion of carbohydrates begins in the mouth since the Amylase is secreted by the salivary glands. However, the majority of the Amylase is produced by the pancreas and secreted into the duodenum of the small intestine. Amylase is also found in small quantities in the blood, urine, and peritoneal fluid of the body. The amount of Amylase in the blood rises either due to its increased secretion into the blood or decreased clearance by the kidneys.Higher levels are commonly seen in acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), where the Amylase levels rise rapidly (in 6 to 48 hours). In mild cases of pancreatitis, Amylase values slowly return to normal within a few days. Higher values for longer periods indicate other complications.
