What is Prolactin test?
Prolactin is a hormone that promotes breast milk production (lactation). It is normally high in pregnant women and immediately after childbirth, and it is low in men and non-pregnant women. This test helps to evaluate conditions such as unexplained milk production in the breast, infertility, erectile dysfunction, pituitary tumors that produce prolactin.
Why get the Prolactin test?
The prolactin test is ordered by doctors to determine the cause of breast milk production not associated with pregnancy. It is also used to diagnose the cause of infertility and detect tumors that produce excess prolactin (prolactinoma).
