What is a VDRL test?
The venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test is designed to assess whether you have syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Syphilis is infected by a bacteria called Treponema pallidum. The bacterium infects by penetrating the lining of the mouth or genital area.VDRL test does not look for the bacterium that cause syphilis. Instead, it checks for the antibodies your body makes in response to antigen produced by cells, that causes damage by the bacteria. Antibodies are a type of proteins produced by your immune system to fights off the invaders like bacteria or toxins.

Tertiary syphilis can last for years, with the final stage leading to a mental illness, blindness, other neurological problems, heart disease, and death.
