A free T4 test measures the amount of unbound thyroxine (T4) circulating in the blood, providing an accurate reflection of active thyroid hormone levels. Free T4 is the hormone not attached to proteins and is readily available for the body to use. It is often tested alongside TSH to assess thyroid function. Abnormal free T4 levels can help diagnose hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Elevated free T4 levels may indicate Graves’ disease, while low levels suggest Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or other forms of hypothyroidism.
